Sagada – Banaue Adventure Part III

We started our 3rd day journey at Sagada in the wee hours of the morning because we wanted to witness the beautiful sunrise in Kiltepan Peak but weather didn’t permit us to see Mr. Sun. Still, we continue the trip and even in the middle of the fog we saw the beauty behind the clouds, it's overlooking a river and rice terraces.

Pine trees + cold breeze = perfect place

So foggy

pardon me for this blurry photo

Fog on the trees

And since we arrived at the viewing station with gloomy weather and high fog, we just took pictures in the area then proceeded to our next destination, the Lake Danum. Lake Danum is not that far from the town. It is located in the borders of Sagada and its neighboring municipality Besao. It looks like a big pond than a lake, however, one cannot deny that it's one of the most beautiful places to visit in the region. Feels like you're in a foreign land while staring at its enchanting beauty. The water in the lake turns into different color depending on the season, sometimes brown and sometimes green.

After cam whoring at Lake Danum we then proceeded to our next destination, the Lumiang burial cave. We travel for about 15 minutes from Lake Danum and stopped over at an observation deck offering a view of Echo Valley and  panorama of its jagged limestone rock formations. From the viewing deck you can also catch some oldest hanging coffins in Sagada with skull in the middle coffin.

From the drop off point, we trek down 30 minutes of slippery slope aided by a steel railing up to the cave’s entrance. Even if it’s raining a bit, we enjoy trekking down because of great lush green scenery and sounds of the humming birds.

After arriving at the cave the feeling is so eerie, as more than 200 wooden coffins that is about 500 years of age are exposed and stacked up at the very entrance of the cave. Once you’re there you will notice that the coffins are a little small for a full-grown adult. According to our friendly tour guide Fred of SAGGAS, the coffins are carved out of pine tree trunk and dead should be forced to a fetal position in order to fit in the coffin. Addition to that, we saw some coffins with gecko carvings which Fred described as a guardian spirit for highly-respected leaders. The place is so sacred and only the privileged can be buried here. People of Sagada believe that the higher they are physically buried, the faster they will reach heaven.

What’s really creepy on our trip is upon reviewing our photos and videos back in Manila, we noticed an unusual howl while trekking down the cave. We don’t know if it is a kind of bird (but too loud howl for a bird) or something else. Maybe some element is welcoming us to the place. But in general, the trip to the Lumiang Cave was really worth it. Given the chance, I will surely go back in here with my friends. You will not just enjoy the scenic view along the way, but you will learn a bunch from Sagada's majestic tradition. A dream come true for us and it is so fulfilling!

Sagada – Banaue Adventure part I

Our group’s original plan of going to Bohol last year was cancelled due to unexpected opportunity of working abroad in months. Since we want to have a worthy bonding before flying to Malaysia, we altered the destination forthwith and opted for Sagada as an alternative trip. With the date of our trip coming closely, everyone got excited and already packed their things. All is set except for the weather. Typhoon “Mina” was traversing North Luzon where Sagada is located and we are closely monitoring the weather situation from time to time. In the height of the storm, Friday night of August 26 2011 when we decided to still pursue our trip and bad weather won’t hinder us from discovering the beauty of Sagada.

The night trip schedule of Cable Tours bus in E. Rodriguez was 8:30 and we got stuck in traffic arriving 30 minutes late before departure. Thank God the bus driver and conductor understood our situation and waited for us despite the left & right complaint of other passengers (Sobrang paimportante kami ng gabing iyon, hehehe). Travel to Sagada will consume you 12 butt-aching hours from Manila. There are 3 options getting there:

First – Manila-Baguio-Sagada via Victory Liner to Baguio and Lizardo bus from Baguio market to Sagada.
Second – Manila-Banaue-Bontoc-Sagada via Florida bus to Banaue, 2.5 hours jeepney ride from Banaue to Bontoc and 45 minutes jeepney ride from Bontoc to Sagada town proper.
Third – Direct route from Manila to Bontoc via Cable tours bus and 45 minutes jeepney ride from Bontoc to Sagada town proper. (650php bus fare)

Sagada town
It was really a brave gesture when we pursued our travel amidst of bad weather. Our 12 hours land travel went smooth though it drizzles at times particularly upon entering Mountain Province which was signal number 2 then. After few hours of battling with slippery steep road, we safely arrived at the town of Bontoc and rode a jeepney heading Sagada town proper. It was a 45 minutes breathtaking road trip because of mostly winding and steep roads. We even safely passed by a few small landslides; thank you God for Your guidance throughout our trip. It started to rain hard and very cold climate greeted us when we arrived at Sagada town proper.

Central town of Sagada

We immediately checked-in at George’s Guest House to drop off our stuffs and ease ourselves from a long trip. GGH has two buildings, one is walking distance from the central town and the other one is the George Guest House extension located 250 meters away from the main building and walking distance from Sumaguing cave. We chose GGH for our preferred inn for its good review and recommendation from Sagada Genuine Guide Association (SAGGAS) where i got my SAGADA reference to make this trip possible. Our home for 3 nights is a 2-storey house with complete facilities for big groups that costs 250 php per head per night. It has 3 bedrooms that can fit 10-12 pax, 3 bathrooms, living room with fireplace, and kitchen where you can cook your own food. Staying at GGH is like staying at your own home because everything you need is there.

After resting a few minutes, wee took our lunch at Cusina Igorota at the central town even if the power supply was cut due to typhoon “Mina.” We really savor the good food at CI especially the tenderness and freshness of the vegetables; undoubtedly that we’re in the home of fresh vegetables.

Cusina Igorota Sagada

While we’re walking back to our hotel, the rain began pouring hard and the wind started blowing vigorously. Bad weather pre-empted us from touring the town and there’s nothing we can do but stay on our hotel. Before dusk, the power was cut and our light that night was just some improvised lighting made with cooking oil. All of us decided to sleep together in just one room upstairs since there is a typhoon, we want to be alert and look after each other because we know that we will be having an unusual night: a sleepless typhoon night.

The Dark Knight Rises - just the beginning

After The Dark Knight’s success, anticipation from fans began for Christopher Nolan to cook a sequel that brings his epic Batman saga to an awesome “so-called” finale with “The Dark Knight Rises.”

After turning from hero to fugitive, Dark Knight earned the blame from the death of DA-turned-psychopath Harvey Dent and engaging in a cover-up for the sake of Gotham citizens and Commissioner Gordon. Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) has been in self-imposed hiding for eight years within the remote mansion Wayne Manor and attended only by his loyal butler Alfred. This has caused him to sink together with his leaderless Wayne Enterprises, but bankruptcy and becoming worthless in the eyes of Gotham didn’t bother him so much.

Not until the unexpected show-up of the cunning cat burglar Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) which has a mysterious agenda. Wayne found her in his room wearing the pearl necklace whom he value most and had it locked in a safe box. Trying to repossess the necklace, Wayne comes out of his shell and show himself in a social gathering that sets off gossip. Apart from Selina Kyle’s vicious intention is the evil revenge of Bane (Tom Hardy), a flagitious terrorist masked by a breathing apparatus that made his voice hard and filtered. After breaking loose on an isolated prison, his focus is on destroying Batman and Gotham City.

Bane exemplifies his power to Gotham when he destroys the New York Stock Exchange, intended to bring Wayne Enterprises to its knees resulting into Wayne’s arch business rival to take over the remains of the company. This implication obliges Bruce Wayne to put on his suit again; Dark Knight rises. He runs into Selina to ask a favor in escorting him to Bane. But, it’s a trap! Bane’s power and invincibility prevail resulting into Batman’s broken bones and Bane throw him into a prison only one boy but no man has ever escaped from. Wayne’s condition let Bane and his army wreaks havoc to Gotham City and planned for a massive destruction by means of a nuclear bomb that needs to be stopped. Wayne is bothered by questions if he can be Batman again?  This time he rejuvenates his strength and power to escape from the isolated prison and eventually to face Bane again and protect the city from big explosion.

Just like anybody who loves superhero movies, Batman Saga is one of those anticipated thrilling movie after the success of Dark Knight with Heath Ledger as Joker. Christopher Nolan didn’t disappoint us with this so-called last part of Batman with good storyline, special effects, story twist and good casting. I, personally enjoy watching this masterpiece as it is full of action and climatic moment. For that, I give this film ☆☆☆☆ out of ☆☆☆☆☆. Addition to that is the exceptional performance of the actors Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne, Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon and Joseph Gordon Levitt (as John Blake) which I think will be the next cast for the role of "Robin.”  Based on the movie’s ending, there is a sneak peek that somewhat I think is a clue that Dark Knight will not end because John Blake found out about the batcave.  Let’s just wait if my theory is true, and if does, I will be just one of those superhero fans that will be happy to see another exciting and action-packed sequel. Perhaps, the movie title depicts a new beginning, Rise of the Dark Knight!

Ice cream is everyone’s indulgence; whatever your mood, whatever your flavor is, it’s a comfort food that makes everyone happy.

One craving date, me and my friends strolled around SM Mall of Asia and found this ice cream parlor named Swensen’s. Since we are so curious about their ice creams and we all have a sweet tooth we entered the store right away to try their mouthwatering ice creams.

Swensen's, owned by Earle Swensen, is an international franchise of ice cream shop born in San Francisco, California in 1948 and there are now over 300 Swensen's Ice cream shops worldwide, in the Middle East, USA, South America, and Asia including the Philippines.

History
Swensen’s Ice cream parlor is clean, cozy and very attractive with touches of pink and captivating designs. Their Ice Cream menu is divided into 8 different categories namely: Scoops, Toppings, Chocolate Fantasy, Cable Carfaits, Outrageous sundaes, Mega sundaes, and Super Sundaes. Their Ice cream prices range from 70 pesos (one scoop) to 600 pesos for special serving (Chocolate Earthquake).  They also offered hot and cold drinks but their drinking water is unlimited for customers. There’s nothing wrong in pampering ourselves by a cup of mouthwatering ice cream once in a while because we all deserve a little indulgence. Since Ice cream can make us gain some extra pounds, it should be take in moderation and much better if followed by a workout. So why do people love ice cream? It’s simply because “Ice Cream can make people happy,” and so do we!

Tuna-Cheese Potato Croquettes

My first attempt to do this recipe was way back College of year 2002 when we joined our school’s Trade fair. We were instructed by our Management professor to think of things or food to sell on the said trade fair and our group come up with the idea of selling street food. During the trade fair, Potato Croquettes was one of our best seller and professors keep on asking for the recipe. Since then, I always include this recipe whenever there is an occasion or just for a simple snack time since it is easy to cook and a best finger food.

Potato Croquettes are mashed potato formed into balls, rolled into bread crumbs then deep fried. It is best mixed with tuna, ham or cheese and partnered with aioli sauce or just plain ketchup-mayo. It is a really good side dish, snack and appetizer that you will surely enjoy.

Here’s how to make tasty Tuna-Cheese Potato Croquettes.

Ingredients

6 pcs           Medium-sized potatoes
1 can           Tuna in oil or brine (drained)
1 teaspoon    Salt
½ teaspoon Ground Pepper
¼ cup Diced Cheese (depending on the number of croquettes)
1 pc            raw egg beaten
½ cup all purpose flour
1 cup          bread crumbs
1 tablespoon garlic crushed
1 tablespoon onion

Peeled potatoes

Ingredients

Diced cheese for filling

For the dipping aioli sauce

½ cup Mayonnaise
2 tablespoon Ketchup
1 clove Crushed garlic

Procedure

1. Peel the potatoes and cut in half. Boil in water until tender and mash in a large bowl.
2. Sauté the canned tuna with garlic and onion.

3. Put in cooked tuna in the bowl of mashed potatoes and season it with salt and pepper. You may want to add more salt and pepper it all depends on your taste. Mix thoroughly.

Mixing up the tuna and mashed potato
4. Prepare the breading mixture of Flour, egg and breadcrumbs in 3 separate plates.

Breading ingredients Flour-Egg-Bread Crumbs
5. Scoop a mixture of mashed potatoes, put in the cheese in the middle just like a filling and form it into balls.
6. Roll each ball into flour, dip in the beaten egg then roll it over breadcrumbs.

Rolled tuna-cheese potato croquettes in bread crumbs
7. Heat cooking oil in the pan. It’s either you pan fry or deep fry the croquettes but much better and cook evenly when deep fried.
8. Fry in medium heat until it turns golden brown.
9. Damp it into paper towel to absorb excess oil.
10. Serve it with your favorite condiment. Either a simple mayo-ketchup mixture or an aioli sauce.
11. Share and enjoy!

The "More" Amazing Spiderman 2012

As first seen on the big screen last 2002, the Marvel comics adaptation – Spider-Man became a box-office hit among moviegoers and fans of this superhero that also spawned a couple of phenomenal sequels. Now after a decade, Columbia Pictures decided to reboot the popular franchise with new cast and new director, Marc Webb.

Sypnosis:

The Amazing Spider-Man
evolves from the life story of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and his high school crush Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). Peter, a high school weakling student being bullied from his school and was abandoned by his parents when he was a little boy, leaving him into custody of his Uncle Ben and Aunt May. While growing up, Peter tried to figure out who he really is and what really happened to his parents. He then discovered a briefcase that contains valuable thing from his father that led him into finding the truth about his parents’. Along his quest he met Dr. Curt Connors, his father’s former colleague in Oscorp who is attempting to develop a limb regeneration serum. While sneaking around Oscorp laboratory, Peter is bitten by a mutated spider that causes him an incredible strength and ability akin to a spider. He uses this strength to quite impress Gwen Stacy and take revenge to bullies at Midtown Science High. Moreover, retaliation impels Peter when his Uncle Ben has been slayed from a convenient store robbery that embarks him into hunting the slayer. On the other hand, Dr. Connors transforms into a formidable lizard after injecting an experimental elixir that urged him into propagation and world domination. Spiderman together with New York Cops and NYPD Captain which is Gwen’s Dad are all set-up to tandem an attack and hold back Dr. Connor’s monstrous plan.

***********

The Amazing Spider-Man is a very entertaining movie that details and explains the origins of Spider-Man. The special effects are very good especially if you watch it on IMAX 3D. The love story between Parker and Stacy is very amusing and effective, mostly because of Emma Stone’s expressive eyes. Even though the story starts in slow pace as it explains how Spider-Man came to be and develop his strength as a superhero, it’s still interesting and exciting to watch. What’s really nice in this movie is the story itself that differs from the previous franchise which is really effective. My favorite part of the movie is the scene on how the whole neighborhood helped Spider-Man to cease Dr. Connors from its monstrous plan.

To sum it up, this movie was great establishing incredible performances from actors and a great script. It’s storyline that focuses on emotions make this an exquisite film despite the less mind-blowing actions. This is a superhero film that's actually worth seeing and for that i give it  ☆☆☆☆ out of ☆☆☆☆☆.

The Amazing Spider-Man ... always amazes me. But this time ... it's better!!!
